Hint

Start by finding the row where the Input column shows 4.

In an input-output table, the numbers in the same row go together. Once you find the right input, read across to the Output column.

Solution walkthrough

01

Identify the input named in the question

\[\text{input}~=~4\]

The question asks, “What is the output when the input is 4?” So the first job is to find the row where the input is 4.

02

Find the matching row in the table

\[\text{Input}~4~|~\text{Output}~14\]

In the table, the row with input 4 is paired with output 14. The two values in the same row go together.

03

Read the value from the Output column

\[\text{output}~=~14\]

Once you are on the correct row, look across to the Output column. That matching output is 14.

04

State the answer in context

\[\text{When}~\text{input}~=~4,~\text{output}~=~14\]

So the output when the input is 4 is 14.

Another way

  1. You can list the table as ordered pairs: (1, 5), (2, 8), (4, 14), (6, 20). The pair with input 4 is (4, 14), so the output is 14.

Common mistake

A common mistake is finding the correct row but reading the Input column again instead of the Output column. In the row with input 4, the answer is 14, not 4.
