Problem

\(\text{Three}\) identical packs each contain \(x~\text{pencils}\) plus \(2~\text{bonus}~\text{pencils}\), for \(24~\text{pencils}\) total. Write a grouped equation using parentheses and solve for \(x\).

What this problem is really about

The key is that each pack is a complete group containing both the regular and bonus pencils. We’ll put that whole per-pack amount in parentheses, multiply it by the number of identical packs, and set it equal to the total. Then we can undo the outside multiplication before separating the regular pencils from the bonus pencils.
