What this problem is really about

A discount tells us what fraction of the original price remains, not the fraction removed. We’ll subtract the discount rate from one to get the remaining multiplier, multiply the unknown original price by that multiplier, and set it equal to the sale price. Dividing by the multiplier then recovers the original amount.
