Interpret complex expressions by treating meaningful sub-expressions as single units.
Choose the expression that matches a verbal description with grouping
Problem
Write an expression for an \(8\%\) tax applied to a subtotal of \(\$20\) plus \(\$4\) per item \(n\).
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
The verbal structure determines the grouping before any arithmetic begins. We’ll combine the fixed charge and per-item contribution into one subtotal, convert the tax rate into a multiplier for the total including tax, and apply that multiplier to the complete grouped amount. Distribution provides a useful scope check because both subtotal terms must receive the same adjustment.
