Interpret complex expressions by treating meaningful sub-expressions as single units.

Interpret a difference of two expressions

Problem

For \(R(x)-C(x)\), with revenue and cost in dollars for \(x\) items, identify minuend, subtrahend, difference role/unit, and sign meaning.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Subtraction compares two complete quantities in a fixed order, so reversing them reverses the meaning of every sign. We’ll name the first and second dollar expressions, preserve minuend-minus-subtrahend order, and interpret the resulting signed gap. Comparing that gap with zero distinguishes the possible business outcomes while keeping the unit dollars.
