Build a function from context by determining an explicit formula, recursive rule, or calculation process.

Build a linear function rule from a verbal comparison of input and output

Problem

Let \(x\) be the input and \(y\) be the output. Write the function for an output that is \(7\) more than the input.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A verbal comparison becomes a function only after the input and output roles are fixed. We’ll start from the input, translate the comparison phrase into the operation performed on it, and write the result as the output. Testing a simple input and subtracting the input from its output checks both the operation and its direction.
