Compare two functions represented in different ways: equations, graphs, tables, or verbal descriptions.

Choose a model type from real-world behavior

Problem

A savings balance starts at \(S_{0}~\text{dollars}\) and increases by the same \(d~\text{dollars}\) at the end of each month \(m\). Determine the model family, equation and domain, parameter meanings and units, decisive evidence, and why an exponential model is inappropriate.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The key modeling question is whether equal time steps produce repeated addition or repeated multiplication. We’ll translate the monthly description into a recurrence, extend it to a rule after any whole number of months, and track the parameters’ units. That structure will identify the model family and show why a competing family does not fit the stated change.
