Compare two functions represented in different ways: equations, graphs, tables, or verbal descriptions.
Compare domains and ranges across representations
Problem
Compare the domain and range of each function: Function A is given by \(P(t)=3t+5\) for integer values of \(t\) from \(1~\text{to}~4\), and Function B is given by \(P(x)=3x+5\) for real values of \(x\) from \(1~\text{to}~4\).
Answer choices
Choose your path.
⌁ Preview only
A
Both functions have domain 1,2,3,4 and range 8,11,14,17 because substituting 1, 2, 3, and 4 gives the outputs 8, 11, 14, and 17.
B
For P(t)=3t+5, the domain is [1,4] and the range is 8,11,14,17; for P(x)=3x+5, the domain is 1,2,3,4 and the range is [8,17].
C
Both functions have domain [1,4] and range [8,17] because they both use the rule P=3(input)+5 and both go from input 1 to input 4.
D
For P(t)=3t+5, the domain is 1,2,3,4 and the range is 8,11,14,17 because t is restricted to integers; for P(x)=3x+5, the domain is [1,4] and the range is [8,17] because x can be any real number from 1 to 4.
