Find a unit rate from a total amount and a total time

Problem

A car completes \(180~\text{miles}\) in \(3~\text{hours}\). Find the rate in miles per hour.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Let the requested unit tell you the order of division: the amount named first goes above the elapsed time named after “per.” Dividing the total amount by the total time produces the amount for one time unit, and multiplying that rate back by the original time provides a quick check.
