Define appropriate quantities for descriptive modeling.
Identify variable, group, and units in a statistical question
Problem
A researcher uses a sample of \(20\) ninth-grade students to answer the question "What is the average height of students in a ninth-grade class?" Identify the variable, its units, and whether the data come from a sample or the entire population.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
Separate three ideas that are easy to blur together: the variable is the characteristic measured, the observational units are the individuals measured, and the data source is the sampled or complete group. Finally, name an actual measurement unit appropriate for the characteristic, not the characteristic itself.
