Report quantities with accuracy appropriate to measurement limitations.

Find the possible true-value interval for a rounded measurement

Problem

Determine the interval of possible true values for a measurement reported as \(12~\text{cm}\) after rounding to the nearest unit.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A rounded report represents a whole interval of possible true values. Move half of the rounding unit below and above the reported value to find the boundaries, then apply the stated rounding convention: the lower midpoint rounds into the report, while the upper midpoint rounds into the next value.
