Rearrange formulas to isolate a chosen quantity, including formulas with quadratic terms.

Rearrange a formula to isolate one variable using inverse operations

Problem

Rearrange \(P=2(l+w)\) to solve for \(l\). First remove the outside factor, then isolate \(l\) inside the resulting sum.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The target variable sits inside a sum, and that whole sum is multiplied by two, so we undo operations from the outside inward. We’ll remove the outside factor first, then subtract the other term in the sum, keeping every operation balanced on both sides.
