Problem

The table shows these values: \(x:~0,~1,~2,~3\); \(f(x):~1,~4,~9,~16\). Find the average rate of change over \([1,3]\).

A table may contain several rows, but an average rate over a named interval is controlled by the two endpoint rows. We’ll match each endpoint input to its output, keep both subtractions in one direction, and interpret the resulting quotient as output change per input unit.
