Verify that dilations scale line segments by the dilation scale factor.

Verify segment scaling using the distance formula

Problem

Preimage \(A(0,0)\), \(B(3,4)\) is dilated to image \(A'(0,0)\), \(B'(6,8)\). Use the distance formula to verify the scale factor.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Coordinate scaling should agree with actual segment-length scaling. We’ll compute the preimage distance from both coordinate changes, compute the image distance independently, form the image-to-preimage ratio in the correct order, and compare that length factor with the componentwise change in the endpoint displacement vector.
