Solve navigation with a signed vector, distance, and bearing
Problem
A boat travels \(12~\text{km}\) east and then \(5~\text{km}\) north. Use the Pythagorean theorem for resultant distance and inverse tangent of \(5/12\) for the angle measured north of east; report \(\text{both}~\text{results}\).
A navigation result combines vector magnitude with a direction measured from a named axis. We’ll encode east and north as perpendicular components, use the Pythagorean theorem for distance, form north-over-east for the bearing angle, and report the rounded direction with its correct north-of-east wording.
