In \(P(x)~=~(x~-~4)(x~+~2)\), classify the factor \(x~-~4\). State its role, the relevant test and result, and any justified contextual constraint.

What this problem is really about

A factor’s role comes from the larger expression around it. Here the surrounding expression is a polynomial product, so each complete factor is a zero-producing unit: when that unit becomes zero, the whole product becomes zero. There is no contextual model here, so no extra physical meaning or domain restriction should be invented.
