Use logarithms to solve exponential equations of the form ab^(ct)=d and evaluate with technology.

Evaluate a logarithm using change of base

Problem

How would you evaluate \(\log_3(20)\) using change of base?

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A logarithm asks for the exponent that makes its base produce the argument. Change of base preserves that meaning by dividing the logarithm of the argument by the logarithm of the original base. Check the order by locating the argument between two familiar powers; the resulting quotient should fall between their exponents.
