Choose trig functions to model periodic phenomena using amplitude, frequency, and midline.

Choose the basic trigonometric model type from a periodic situation's starting position

Problem

A Ferris wheel starts at its midline and rises. Use the diagram to identify the basic signed trigonometric model type.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Translate the physical starting position into displacement from the situation's midline, then record whether that displacement initially rises or falls. Parent sine models begin on the midline, whereas parent cosine models begin at an extreme. Once the family matches the starting level, the initial direction determines the sign of the model.
