Identify cross-sections of 3D objects and solids generated by rotating 2D objects.

Identify the solid formed by revolving a 2D figure around a line in its plane

Problem

What solid is formed by revolving a semicircular region about its diameter?

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Track both the curved boundary and the filled interior as the semicircular region turns about its diameter. The arc sweeps a boundary at a fixed distance from the midpoint, while each segment perpendicular to the axis sweeps a filled disk. A full revolution covers both sides of the original plane, and contact with the axis rules out any central hole.
