Parse a study report into population, sample, variables, and design
Problem
A survey samples \(1,200\) adults from a national adult roster and records weekly exercise. Identify the population, sample, observational unit, response, and study design.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
Parse a report from largest scope to smallest unit: the frame defines the supported population, the selected members form the sample, and one measured member is the observational unit. Then name the recorded response and ask whether researchers imposed any condition. Measuring behavior without assignment makes the design observational, even when the sample itself was randomly drawn.
