Hint

Start by rewriting 3/5 as 3 ÷ 5 so you can find its decimal form.

A fraction means division, and a percent is the same value written out of 100.

Solution walkthrough

01

Interpret the fraction as division

\[3/5~=~3~/~5\]

A fraction's numerator divided by its denominator gives the decimal form.

02

Find the decimal

\[3~/~5~=~0.6\]

Five goes into 30 tenths six times, so 3/5 equals six tenths.

03

Rewrite to hundredths

\[0.6~=~0.60~=~60/100\]

Adding a trailing zero does not change the decimal. Sixty hundredths shows the percent directly.

04

Convert to percent

\[0.6~x~100\%~=~60\%\]

Multiplying a decimal by 100 expresses the same value per hundred.

05

Check equivalence

\[60\%~=~60/100~=~3/5\]

Reducing 60/100 by dividing both parts by 20 returns the original fraction.

06

State all equivalent forms

\[3/5~=~0.6~=~60\%\]

Three fifths, zero point six, and sixty percent are three representations of the same value.

+

Another way

  1. Scale 3/5 by 20/20 to get 60/100, which reads directly as 0.60 and 60%.

!

Common mistake

Do not write 0.6 as 6%. Zero point six is sixty hundredths, so it equals 60%.
