Compare, order, and estimate whole numbers and decimals using place value and magnitude sense.

Check a rounding claim

Problem

A student says, “\(7.46\) rounds to \(7.4\) to the nearest tenth.” Check the claim by finding the actual rounded value.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

To test the student’s claim, we need to round independently rather than trust the stated result. We’ll locate the tenths digit, use the hundredths digit to decide whether it stays or increases, and then compare that result with the claim. The same rule both checks the reasoning and supplies the actual rounded value.
