Estimate sums, products, quotients, and percent results, then judge whether an exact answer is reasonable.

Estimate a product with specified rounding

Problem

Estimate \(298~\times~41\) by rounding \(298\) to the nearest hundred, rounding \(41\) to the nearest ten, and multiplying the rounded factors.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The estimate depends on rounding each factor to the particular place named for it. We’ll use the tens digit to round the larger factor to a hundred and the ones digit to round the other factor to a ten. Multiplying those simpler factors gives a product with the right overall magnitude.
