Estimate a contextual product with specified factors

Problem

A store has \(38~\text{boxes}\) with \(24~\text{cans}\) in each box. Estimate the total number of cans using the specified benchmark factors \(40~\text{boxes}\) and \(25~\text{cans}~\text{per}~\text{box}\). Then decide whether a claim of \(500~\text{cans}\) is reasonable.

What this problem is really about

Because the cans come in equal groups, the total is modeled by multiplication. We’ll replace the box count and cans-per-box count with the specified benchmark factors, multiply those easier numbers, and compare the estimate with the claim. The size of that comparison will tell us whether the claim is reasonable.
