Estimate sums, products, quotients, and percent results, then judge whether an exact answer is reasonable.
Estimate a multi-step result with specified benchmarks
Problem
A \(\$47.80\) food order adds \(8\%\) tax and a \(20\%\) tip. Estimate with \(\$48~+~\$4~+~\$10\). Compare \(\$61.42\)'s positive gap with \(10\%\) of the estimate.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
The bill estimate must keep all three parts: food, tax, and tip. We’ll add the specified benchmark amounts, measure the positive gap between that estimate and the reported total, and calculate ten percent of the estimate as the allowed limit. Comparing the gap with the limit determines whether the report is reasonable.
