Problem

A square patio is \(6~\text{feet}\) long on each side, so its area is \(6^2~\text{square}~\text{feet}\). An entry section adds \(8~\text{square}~\text{feet}\). What is the total area? Evaluate \(6^2~+~8\).

What this problem is really about

The squared term represents the area of the square patio because both side lengths are the same. We’ll interpret the exponent as two factors of the side length, calculate that area, and then add the separate entry area. Keeping both quantities in square feet makes the final addition meaningful.
