Evaluate multi-step numerical expressions using order of operations, including grouping symbols and exponents.

Check a grouped-expression claim

Problem

A student says \(3~+~(5~-~1)~\times~2~=~12\). Classify the claim as correct or incorrect and give the correct value.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

We can judge the claim only after evaluating the expression independently. We’ll simplify the parentheses first, multiply the grouped result by the outside factor, and add the remaining term last. Comparing that correctly computed value with the student’s value will classify the claim.
