Evaluate multi-step numerical expressions using order of operations, including grouping symbols and exponents.
Compare two structured expressions
Problem
Evaluate both expressions and compare their values: Expression A \(=~3~\times~(4~+~2)\) and Expression B \(=~3~\times~4~+~2\). State whether Expression A is greater, Expression B is greater, or the expressions are equal, and give both values.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
The two expressions use the same numbers but different grouping, so we must evaluate each structure on its own. We’ll complete the parenthesized sum in the first expression, use multiplication before addition in the second, and then compare the two finished values. The grouping determines which terms the factor affects.
