What this problem is really about
Thirds and sixths are different-sized pieces, so we must rename them before adding. We’ll use six as the common denominator, scale one third to an equivalent number of sixths, combine the sixth-size pieces, and reduce the result. Equal denominators make the numerator addition meaningful.
