Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with appropriate common denominators.

Subtract contextual fractional amounts

Problem

A ribbon is \(2~1/2~\text{feet}\) long, and \(3/4~\text{foot}\) is cut off. Calculate the length left in simplified form.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The ribbon left is the starting length minus the cut length. We’ll express both fractional parts in fourths, trade one whole foot for four fourths because two fourths is too small, and then subtract the cut sections. Adding the removed length back to the remainder will check both the arithmetic and the unit.
