Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with appropriate common denominators.
Work with mixed numbers in context
Problem
Mia hiked \(3~1/4\) miles in the morning and \(2~2/3\) miles in the afternoon. Calculate the total as a simplified mixed number.
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
We’ll combine the morning and afternoon distances by separating whole miles from fractional miles. The fourth and third parts need a common denominator, so we’ll rename both in twelfths, add the like-sized pieces, and decide whether the fractional sum creates another whole. Finally, we’ll check lowest terms and keep miles attached.
