Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with appropriate common denominators.

Choose the right fraction-operation strategy

Problem

Solve \(5/6~-~1/4\). Determine the least common denominator from \(10\), \(12\), and \(24\). State the denominator, rewrite both fractions, subtract, and give the simplified result.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A common denominator must be divisible by both six and four, and the least one is the smallest value that passes both tests. We’ll test the three proposed denominators, scale each fraction to the least valid unit, subtract the numerators, and check lowest terms. This order keeps the fractions equivalent before the subtraction begins.
