Find a fraction of an amount

Problem

A recipe uses \(2/3~\text{cup}\) of yogurt, and you make \(3/4\) of it. Calculate the amount of yogurt used in cups.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Here, “three fourths of” the full yogurt amount signals multiplication. We’ll multiply three fourths by two thirds cup, interpret the numerator and denominator as an overlap in a fourths-by-thirds area model, and simplify while keeping cups attached. The result should be less than two thirds cup because only part of the recipe is being made.
