Find a percent of a quantity and interpret the result in context.

Screen for correct percent-of-quantity representations

Problem

Evaluate every representation below as a model of \(40\%\) of \(60\).

Representations to check:
1. \(0.4~\times~60~=~24\)
2. \(40/100\) of \(60\) is \(24\)
3. \(60\%\) of \(40\) is \(24\)
4. \(24\) is \(40\%\) of \(60\)
5. \(0.04~\times~60~=~24\)
6. A class of \(60\) students has \(24\) students wearing red, so \(40\%\) of the class is wearing red

Include every representation that is correct.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Every valid representation must preserve all three roles: forty percent as the rate, sixty as the whole, and the resulting part. We’ll establish that target relationship, test each equation or context against it, and include every exact match. A statement with the same product can still fail if it swaps the percent and whole or uses a nonequivalent decimal.
