Calculate percent increase and decrease and explain what the percent measures.

Identify and compute percent change

Problem

Calculate the percent change from \(24\) to \(30\) and classify it as an increase or decrease.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

We’ll first compare twenty-four and thirty to identify the direction of change, then find the numerical difference. Percent change uses the original twenty-four as its denominator, so we’ll divide the difference by that starting value and convert to percent. Reapplying the change to the original checks both the magnitude and direction label.
