Interpret one percent application in context

Problem

A bike rental costs \(\$45\) before \(8\%\) sales tax. Calculate and label the total rental cost after tax.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The sales tax is calculated from the forty-five-dollar pre-tax rental price, while the requested amount is the total after tax. We’ll convert eight percent to a decimal, find the added tax, and combine it with the original price. Labeling the final amount as total cost prevents stopping at the intermediate tax charge.
