Solve discount, markup, tax, tip, and simple interest style percent problems.

Translate a percent application into an equation

Problem

A \(\$40\) backpack has \(7\%\) sales tax. Use a total-cost decimal multiplier and evaluate the total.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

A total-cost multiplier must include the full original price plus the seven-percent tax. We’ll combine one hundred percent and seven percent, convert that total rate to a decimal, and multiply by the forty-dollar base. Separately finding the tax and adding it to forty checks that the multiplier represents the total rather than just the tax.
