Compute and interpret unit rates, including rates with fractional or decimal quantities.

Choose a smart unit-rate strategy

Problem

A \(2.5\text{-}\text{pound}\) bag costs \(\$7.50\). Consider these strategies for cost per ounce: A, convert pounds to ounces, then divide cost by ounces; B, find dollars per pound and stop; C, multiply cost by \(16\). Choose the strategy that works, then calculate the cost per ounce.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Each proposed strategy should end in dollars per one ounce, so we’ll track the units through every operation. We’ll check whether the weight is expressed in ounces before total dollars are divided by total ounces, and reject work that stops in pounds or changes the money with the conversion factor. Multiplying back should recover the original cost.
