Generate and justify equivalent ratios using scaling, tables, and diagrams.

Use an equivalent ratio in context

Problem

A paint mix has \(\text{red}:\text{white}~=~1:3\). Scale the ratio to \(4~\text{cups}\) of red paint.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The target changes the red paint amount, but an equivalent mixture must change the white paint by the same multiplicative factor. We’ll divide the target red amount by the original red amount, apply that factor to three cups of white, and keep red first in the final ratio. Reducing the scaled pair will confirm the original shade.
