Apples cost \(\$12.50\) for \(5~\text{pounds}\). With \(x~=~\text{pounds}\) and \(y~=~\text{dollars}\) in \(y=kx\), find \(k\) with units.

What this problem is really about

Here y measures dollars and x measures pounds, so k must carry output-per-input units: dollars per pound. We’ll divide the total dollar amount by the matching weight to find the price for one pound, then attach the units in that order. Multiplying the unit price by five pounds should reconstruct the stated total cost.
