Solve proportion equations and explain why the setup matches the context.

Solve a proportion with the unknown in any position

Problem

Solve the proportion \(9/x~=~15/20\). What is \(x\)?

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

The unknown appears in a denominator, but cross multiplication still pairs the same diagonals. We’ll multiply nine by twenty and fifteen by x, set those products equal, and divide by the coefficient attached to x. Reducing both fractions after substitution checks the value and prevents mistaking the ratio itself for the unknown denominator.
