Solve proportion equations and explain why the setup matches the context.

Translate words into a proportion

Problem

Translate “\(18\) is to \(24\) as \(x\) is to \(40\)” into the fixed frame \(18/24~=~\text{\_\_}/\text{\_\_}\) and solve for \(x\).

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

This is a translation problem before it is an equation-solving problem. Treat each “is to” phrase as an ordered pair, place the first member of each pair in the same ratio position, and let “as” connect the equal ratios. Once that order is secure, solve the proportion and check that both ratios simplify to the same value.
