If \(18\) is \(30\%\) of a number, what is the whole number? Solve using a percent proportion.

Eighteen is only the known part here, so the unknown whole belongs beneath it in the part-over-whole ratio. Set that equal to thirty over one hundred and solve for the denominator. Since thirty percent is less than half, the whole must be more than twice the part; that gives a useful reasonableness check.
