Compare, order, and locate signed integers and rational numbers on a number line.

Find a missing value from a number line

Problem

On the number line, the tick marks are evenly spaced. \(\text{One}~\text{labeled}~\text{tick}\) is \(-6\) and another labeled tick is \(0\). Point \(P\) is plotted on the tick exactly halfway between \(-6\) and \(0\). What number is Point \(P\)?

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Point P is described by its relationship to two known endpoints, so treat it as a midpoint problem. Find the total distance from negative six to zero, take half of that distance, and move that many units from either endpoint. The result must remain between the endpoints and be equally far from both, which checks both its magnitude and sign.
