Compare, order, and locate signed integers and rational numbers on a number line.
Reason about signed values and zero in context
Problem
Ava's balances are checking \(-\$12\), savings \(+\$18\), and travel fund \(-\$5\). Compare their distances from \(\$0\), and identify the balance closest to \(\$0\).
Big Picture
What this problem is really about
Closest to zero asks about distance, not about which signed balance is greatest or smallest. Take the absolute value of each account balance while keeping its account name attached, then compare those nonnegative distances. The account with the smallest absolute value is nearest zero, regardless of whether its balance is positive or negative.
