Add and subtract signed numbers and explain the meaning of the sign changes.

Compare contextual signed-operation results

Problem

Account \(A\) is modeled by \(\$18~+~(-\$27)\), and Account \(B\) is modeled by \(-\$6~+~\$10\). Calculate \(\text{both}~\text{final}~\text{balances}\), and compare them.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Treat the accounts as two separate signed-addition problems before comparing anything. For each one, combine the starting balance with its signed change, using cancellation or a move through zero to find the final balance. Only then compare the two results on the number line; the starting amounts and change magnitudes alone do not determine which account finishes higher.
