Problem

A diver starts \(6~\text{meters}\) below sea level and rises \(4~\text{meters}\). Write the signed expression, and calculate the final elevation.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Use sea level as zero and assign signs to the two pieces independently. Starting below sea level makes the initial elevation negative, while rising makes the change positive. Add that signed change to the signed starting point, then interpret whether the result remains below zero and report it as an elevation in meters.
