Multiply and divide signed numbers and interpret sign patterns correctly.

Translate signed rate or repeated change into symbols

Problem

A scuba diver descends \(12~\text{feet}~\text{each}~\text{minute}\) for \(5~\text{minutes}\). Write the signed multiplication expression, and calculate the total elevation change.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Translate the descent as a negative change per minute, and treat five minutes as the positive repetition count. Multiplying those quantities models five identical changes rather than one addition involving five and twelve. Use the factor signs for the total change’s direction, the absolute values for its magnitude, and report the result in feet.
