Translate verbal phrases and short contexts into algebraic expressions.

Translate a visual model into an expression

Problem

A strip model has \(3~\text{equal}~\text{boxes}\) labeled \(x\) followed by \(\text{one}~\text{box}~\text{labeled}~4\). Translate the whole model into an algebraic expression.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Translate every piece of the strip exactly once. Combine the three equal x-boxes as three copies of the variable, then add the separate fixed box as a constant rather than counting it as another x. Expanding the expression back into repeated addition should reproduce the four displayed pieces.
