Translate verbal phrases and short contexts into algebraic expressions.

Translate structured phrases and contexts into expressions

Problem

Translate \(4\) less than \(\text{three}~\text{times}\) the sum of \(x\) and \(2\) into an algebraic expression.

Big Picture

What this problem is really about

Translate from the inside outward. Group the sum of x and two first, multiply that whole quantity by three, and only then interpret “four less than” as subtracting four from the product. This order preserves which terms the multiplier reaches and prevents the final subtraction from being reversed.
